Journal # 18: Sexual Response And Behavior

Throughout reading chapter 11, section 3 and looking on online at this link: http://www.studentpulse.com/articles/40/wake-up-and-smell-the-condoms-an-analysis-of-sex-education-programs-in-the-united-states-the-netherlands-sweden-australia-france-and-germany I have found that the culture you live in plays a key role in your gender differences. The way your culture percieves sexual values and practices puts great emphasise on your views. If you grew up in a place that was very hard struck on abstinence and innocence, such as the United States. You may feel as if you could not express yourself to way need be. However, if you lived somewhere such as France, who teaches there children about the first steps to a healthy relationship as young as age 5, which is when they first start to become aware of their gender differences. Says website http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/education/2008-10-23-britain-sex-ed_N.htm . They will feel more comfortable asking realistic questions about relationships and risky behavior that most teens in middle school and high school would feel awkward saying in front of a groups of their friends and peers. Overall, I believe that the way that France is teaching sex ed is the proper way to do it. That way children are getting the proper education they need on this touchy subject without too much information too soon, but just enough so that as they go down the line they will feel comfortable asking the more increased questions when the time comes.

Task #2: Research how culture plays a part in gender differences. Provide information on two different cultures and their unique perspectives on gender roles/identity. Don't forget to cite and link your sources! Task #3: Research the American practices of teaching Sex Education and compare it to how another country teaches Sex Education. Provide as much information as you can with facts and data and explain which of the two countries has the better Sex Education and why. Consider these countries: the Netherlands, Sweden, Australia, France, Germany, Poland, or find one of your own. As you research, think about the age in which these countries teach sex ed and tell me what you think based on what you know about where these children are developmentally.
